The deadline for club registration and approval is Sept. 16 but there are some changes to the policies for the 2024-25 school year as Frisco ISD implemented a new rule allowing only curricular clubs to meet during advisory, while non-curricular clubs have to meet before and after school.
“It won’t give students a lot of choices in terms of finding sponsors for that club if it’s non-curricular because the teachers would have to do it outside of their own personal time,” Assistant Principal Victoria Tong said. “So out of the school day, they are coming early or they are leaving late for a particular club to exist, which leads to it being challenging for students to enjoy content that’s not related to content around school.”
Despite these changes, Tong has some tips on how to find a club sponsor.
“Definitely be particular about the club that you want and make it broader than just so narrow,” Tong said. “Because a lot of times last year there were clubs that were so specific that I don’t see a lot of kids wanting to join and if they broaden the category to attract more kids into the club then I feel the sponsor would say yes to having that club exist.”
Many students agree with Tong, including senior Ashvita Suresh-Kumar, is still searching for a sponsor for this year.
“There is only a set number of advisories now, especially since we don’t have Friday advisories now,” Kumar said. “It kinda cuts down the amount of clubs you can participate in depending on your morning and afternoon.”
