Name: Sonja Mo
Grade: 11th
Instrument: Cello
Years of experience: 5 years
Wingspan: What fine arts are you in and when did you join?
Mo: I’m in Orchestra, and I started playing in 6th grade.
Wingspan: What instrument do you play and why did you decide to play it?
Mo: I play the cello! Before I switched to the cello, I played the violin. However, I always hated how high pitched the instrument was, so switching to cello was the perfect choice. It has both low and high notes, and produces a really good sound that no other instrument can make!
Wingspan: What are the most difficult parts about being in Orchestra?
Mo: I think the most difficult part about being in Orchestra is playing as a unified group. In order to make music lyrical and melodic, the whole orchestra needs to work together to create good tones that blend together. Simultaneously, the orchestra also needs to feel the musicality of each piece as one united group.
Wingspan: What are the best parts about being in Orchestra?
Mo: I think the best part of Orchestra is the community of people! Everyone is so sweet and welcoming, which makes playing in an orchestra and going to socials so much more fun.
Wingspan: Do you hold any leadership roles? What are some of your responsibilities?
Mo: I’m the Junior Vice President this year! I basically work with the President team to create fun events and socials, while also helping out the directors in any way possible. This position also allows me to interact with a bunch of different Orchestra members, allowing me to also welcome them into this amazing community.
