Daylight Saving Time ends on Nov. 3, but on Wednesday, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are setting their clocks to fall forward with a 6 p.m. start for the annual Midnight Madness season tip off in the main gym.
“Midnight Madness is a good way to kick off our basketball season. [It] gives our players to play in front of fans for the first time,” boys’ head coach Bruce Wright said. “[It] gives the opportunity for the girls and the boys to do things together and have some competitions just to start the year on a positive note.”
“This is an opportunity to shed some light and bring excitement for the upcoming season,” girls’ head coach Ross Reedy said. “Not just for us, but also the winter sports coming along, it’s essentially another kickoff to the year… If there’s anything to teach, it’s to be grateful that people are celebrating [the team].”
In previous years, Midnight Madness has featured 3-point shooting contests as well as players showing off their dunking ability.
“One thing we started last year on the boys side that we’re going to do again this year is an alumni game,” Wright said. “So, you know, some old players from liberty basketball come back and they play against the current players, against or play against the current players. And that was really fun.”
Junior Natalia Soto, who is participating in the girls’ alumni scrimmage, is excited for the upcoming season.
“I’m mostly excited for our basketball team to showcase our skills and bring excitement towards the season,” Soto said.
Also participating in the girls’ alumni scrimmage, sophomore varsity basketball player Ellyan Robins, is eager not only participating, but also seeing other teams.
“[I’m looking forward to] playing at Midnight Madness,” Robins said. “[As well as] seeing Red Rhythm’s performance.”
