The Redhawks boys’ basketball team (1-0) came out on top 66-47 against the McKinney North Bulldogs (0-1) in their season opener Friday.
“My best strength from Friday would definitely be my ability to make three pointers and making the right decisions offensively and defensively,” junior Toshiro Mahtani said. “Some weaknesses were that I was not as strong or quick as other but due to my skill I was still able to still help the team.”
From assistant coach Robert Wilson’s viewpoint, the game was a good victory, but the Redhawks can’t afford to rest on their laurels.
“We started off a bit slow, which is somewhat expected going up against our first opponent, but we regrouped at half-time and almost doubled our point total from the first half,” Wilson said. “ At halftime, it was a two-point game. We needed to work a bit harder to pull away, and that’s exactly what happened in that third quarter. If we couple that with some high-pressure defense, there will be real opportunities to disrupt some of the tougher opponents in our district.”
