Many students spend their breaks and long weekends scrolling on their phone, hanging out with friends, or traveling, Redhawks that are a part of Young Life, are preparing to disconnect.
However, over MLK weekend, students from all over Texas will travel to Lonehollow Ranch in hill country to detach and learn more about Jesus.
“I personally love not having my phone,” senior Olivia Forden said. “It’s just nice to have a break from everything like social media and worrying about what people are doing or stressing out about school or work. You just focus on connecting with the people you’re with and the Lord. After these camps, my friends and I became even closer because we learned so much about each other; we’re not looking at our phones and just focusing on each other.”
Young Life is an international Christian Ministry with a local Frisco ISD group. The organization holds meetings every Monday night at Frisco First Baptist Church.
“It is the shortened version of what the weeklong summer camp is,” Liberty Girls’ Senior Leader Britta Walker said. “It’s a weekend to spend time with your friends and leader and learn more about your faith. We will do that through fun outdoor activities, club, and cabin time.”
Upperclassmen students can choose to attend as regular campers or be part of the work crew. Work crews are a part of every Young Life camp. Students volunteer their time to serve the campers, including cleaning and cooking.
“This year me and my friend are joining the work crew,” junior Katie Meeks said. “I’m most excited to see how the camp functions behind the scenes to get away for a weekend.”
Temperatures are expected to drop to the teens over the weekend, but senior Mackenzie Nelson believes this won’t stop the group from having fun.
“Even with the temperatures being freezing the leaders and staff always find ways that will bring us together,” Nelson said. “With different activities being inside or outside we still find ways to have fun. For example, last year we had to stay inside a lot of the time because it was so cold but we were able to get closer as a group by just playing games in our cabin. With all the years I have been to Lonehollow I trust the staff will do anything to make the weekend fun even with the cold weather.”
