Sankalp, an Indian fine dining restaurant located in Plano, aims to provide customers with authentic Indian cuisine and a fun place to spend time with friends and family.
Its welcoming and comforting atmosphere is made clear from the moment you step inside as the main doors click back into place, quietly announcing your presence.
The restaurant is moderately crowded most evenings but usually there’s no wait to be seated. Once inside, those familiar with Bollywood songs may be able to catch their favorite song playing or it might be the sound of drums and other instruments melting into the background.
Sankalp has a vast variety of options including North and South Indian cuisine soups, pizza, sandwiches, snacks and Chaat variety along with other Indo Chinese options.
Vegetable Manchurian, which is a deep fried blend of vegetables into a ball, coated with flour and chili garlic sauce and then garnished with spring onions is an absolutely mouthwatering treat and a perfect way to start off your meal. Irrespective of what is being ordered for the rest of the meal, this dish is an absolute must for my family whenever we go, especially during cold weather since it’s served steaming hot.
Although there are many choices of bread or rice, a personal favorite of mine is Phulka, a wheat flat bread usually eaten with gravy as it is rather plain by itself. However, its buttery and soft texture will always be noticeable and appreciated even if it’s eaten with something more flavorful to supplement for its bland taste. Ordered at many other restaurants, I’m pleased to note that it was cooked all the way yet did not get overcooked (you can tell whether it’s been accidentally burned a little when dark black spots appear on it).
Vegetable Jalfrezi is another family favorite as unlike other gravies there is no “star” of the show ingredient. Various ground spices and herbs such as cloves, cilantro seeds, turmeric, along with hints of chili and ginger combine with rich cream and garden- fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, peas and bell peppers – together forming a symphony of delectable and creamy delight, perfect with rice or any other choice of bread.
A pleasant surprise could also await when a cup of gravy is ordered as a bowl of basmati rice with a side of lemons and raw onions was brought along as well.
Now you might be thinking “what’s a meal without dessert?” Fear not for there are many different desserts ranging from ice creams, Faloodas, brownies and more.
Raj Bhog ice cream is truly the cherry on top of this meal. Its name translates to “Royal Feast” as it was once a dish reserved only to royalty due to its use of fancy spices such as saffron and blend of various nuts. Although this was traditionally served in a mud pot, Sankalp serves it in a fancy gold goblet, topped with rose syrup and nuts – a perfect way to end your meal.
With its amazing and accommodating customer service, variety of choices and family friendly set up, Sankalp surpasses expectations from the moment you step inside.
