Winning three straight championships is usually pretty tough. Just ask the Kansas City Chiefs.
It’s a feeling the girls’ basketball team can relate to as the back-to-back defending state champions fell to Wakeland 48-42 Monday night in the opening round of the 2025 playoffs.
“I think the biggest takeaway from the game was how hard our kids played for the game, and how proud of them we all are,” assistant coach Jayci Morton said.
This was the last basketball game as a Redhawk for senior Kathryn Murphy, who says that the team played extremely hard in the game, but fell short in the end.
“[Wakeland] is super aggressive and hard-working and they’re really tall and long, so they were hitting a ton of shots,” Murphy said. “Unfortunately, when we had that opportunity to take shots, they just weren’t falling quite as well. We still worked hard, we climbed back and were up two points, 41-39. There was a minute 50 left on the clock, which you think is super fast but when you’re playing a basketball game, you want it to go even faster. It’s sad that it’s my last game but I came into the game wanting to give everything I had and I’m proud of what I left on the court.”
