Wingspan: When and why did you start playing baseball?
Smith: “I started playing baseball when I was like four or five. I got into it because I just loved the game, and my family was into it too. Ever since then, it’s just been my thing.”
Wingspan: What is your favorite part about playing baseball?
Smith: “My favorite part is the competition and the mental side of it. Baseball is a game of failure, so it’s all about how you handle it and bounce back. Plus, there’s nothing better than coming through in a big moment.”
Wingspan: Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
Smith: “Definitely my dad. He’s always pushed me to be my best, not just in baseball but in life. He’s taught me to work hard, stay humble, and trust God through everything.”
Wingspan: How do you cope if you have a bad game?
Smith: “If I have a bad game, I just try to shake it off. Baseball is all about failure, so I can’t let one game get to me. I’ll think about what I did wrong, learn from it, and move on to the next one.”
Wingspan: How has the team been preparing for the season?
Smith: “We’ve been grinding—hitting the weight room, getting reps in, and just staying locked in. Even though I’m injured right now, I’m still doing what I can to stay ready and help my team.”
Wingspan: What are your goals for this season?
Smith: “I just want to help my team win however I can and keep getting better. Also, I want to make sure I’m setting myself up for the future, whether that’s improving my game or being a leader.”
Wingspan: Do you plan to continue your baseball career after high school? Why or why not?
Smith: “Yeah, for sure. I’ve got some interests from college coaches and I want to play at the highest level I can. I love the game too much to stop, and I want to see how far I can take it.”
