Food, friends, music, and a chance to dance: all at orchestra’s last after-school social of the year, a disco dance party, which is taking place Friday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
“We’re really excited to offer to our orchestra students a new social,” associate orchestra director Brandon Lucio said. “This was brought on by our board. They really wanted to kind of end the year with a bang and offer an opportunity for students to have a lot of fun and kind of a way to celebrate all of our achievements throughout the year.”
Orchestra senior vice president, senior Nithya Boddu came up with the idea of this social last summer and is looking forward to seeing how it turns out, especially because it’s different from typical socials.
“This one does stand out,” Boddu said. “We haven’t had a social like this. Most of our socials are planned with activities and games but this one is a social without much structure, so I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
Finishing up her senior year of high school, Boddu feels sentimental about this being her last after-school social on campus.
“Honestly, it’s such a bittersweet experience because I’ve loved going to orchestra socials since my freshman year,” Boddu said. “I’m glad this one’s going to be the last because it´ll be lots of fun.”
For junior Sarah Mills, doing something new for an orchestra social is appreciated.
“I don’t really care what type of socials we have, but I like the ones that have more distinct activities so we can do different stuff instead of repeating everything each year,” Mills said. “[Although], I do tend to like anything … with my friends.”
Lucio also believes that getting to spend time with people in the orchestra community is the best part of these events.
“In order to have a successful program in the arts, you have to build a culture within so that the students feel seen, feel loved, and also feel like they’re connected with one other,” Lucio said. “Our classes only meet for so long throughout the week, and we feel like having these socials helps our students to get to know each other and to make memories with one another.”
