With the spring semester in full swing, the Future Farmers of America’s competition season is ready to harvest its work with the Redhawks chapter gearing up for what’s to come.
“I’m really hopeful,” FFA sponsor Brittany Avant said. “We had three teams compete at state last year, so I am really hoping that those three teams will compete at state again this year, and that our fourth team that didn’t qualify for state can get closer, if not qualify this year.”
For sophomore Elizabeth Alberthal, this season is an opportunity to uphold previous success.
“I compete in Milk Quality, so we drink milk and eat other dairy based products and judge them based on their quality,” Alberthal said. “We’re hoping to go to state for the third time this year. We went the last two years, so we’re hoping for a three-peat.”
In terms of the future, Avant says that anyone can find a place in FFA.
“FFA is the largest youth leadership organization in the country. I like to say that we have something for everyone, from a talent show contest that has featured people that end up participating in American Idol to speaking contests,” Avant said. “We literally have something for everyone depending on what your interests are.”
Sophomore Oliver Hong hopes to make it to state while also spending time with his team.
“My favorite part of being in FFA is definitely competitions,” Hong said. “I also get to hangout with the Liberty FFA team and my friends. We go to different places for competitions, and it’s really fun.”
The organization has earned various awards and top placements, but there’s one area of success Avant didn’t see coming.
“Milk quality is a contest that I never would have expected to be a coach of, and the fact that I am anticipating us going to state for the third year in a row for that contest is honestly very surprising,” Avant said. “We have learned a lot over the last few years and being one of the top teams in the North Texas area has made us one to beat and it is really exciting being that competitive.”
