Avocados are so overrated. They cost too much, they don’t taste good, and they’re not cute. Everyone seems to be under the impression that avocados are the “it” food, when in reality, they’re a tool for rich people to make their lives look aesthetically pleasing.
Sure, guacamole is delicious, and avocado toast can be okay, but it takes lots of other ingredients to make it taste good. If it was just avocados, it would taste like unsalted butter with a hint of green.
On average, one medium avocado costs about $1.70 a piece. This doesn’t seem like all that much when you look at it, but the average cost of apples is $1.09 a pound, and a pound consists of about 3 apples. So I can get 3 apples for less than I can get 1 avocado.
If I want to have avocado toast for breakfast every day this week, I would need 4 avocados assuming I’m using half an avocado for each piece of toast. That’s $6.80, not including the bread or the other ingredients to make it taste less like dirty dollar bills and mush.
They also only last 2-3 days. So in order to have my avocado toast, I not only need to pay an unruly amount of money on them, but I also might have to go out and get more avocados if they go bad, or I could eat bad avocados.
People also like to buy products with little avocados printed onto them. You could literally have an avocado themed birthday party. You can buy pillows, wall art, ornaments, T-shirts, and so many things that don’t require avocados to be involved.
I don’t understand why any of these things exist when avocados don’t look appealing in the slightest. Maybe in the cartoon clipart versions that people are buying they can be considered cute, but in reality, they look like a dinosaur could hatch out of it at any moment.
People will argue that the fat in avocados is good for you, and yes, an avocado would be considered a goldmine of nutrition in hunter-gatherer times. But nowadays it’s so easy to find other foods that carry the same benefits, or foods that are considered better.
There are plenty of things that are higher in nutrition with less calories than avocados that taste infinitely better. If avocados were really that good, why would they only be eaten with other things with them? No one is dipping their tortilla chips in straight avocado. No one is eating their toast with straight avocado. No one is eating straight avocado.
Avocados are okay at best. They’re nothing to swoon over, and they’re certainly nothing I need printed on my blankets or my water bottles. They do not need to be as popular as they are.
