Opinion: girl power
September 21, 2016
Being a girl is by no means easy.
We deal with what feels like the impossible day in and day out at times. There’s always talk about the ability of young girls’ and women to take on something bigger than themselves whether it be corporate America, hospitals, courtrooms, government official positions, or something entirely different.
We as girls have the right to dream and chase that dream until we reach it. For some of us that may be being a mother and being great at it, for others that may mean being a business engineer or a rocket scientist. We can do anything, no matter how cliche that sounds, it’s true.
In my personal experience, I’ve seen my mother single-handedly raise two children (one who was quite rebellious) and chase her dream of finding her place in the corporate world all the while trying to teach me to refrain from throwing punches at my brother. And I think that’s amazing.
Every single girl has that same power my mom does, we just have to want it. And if you do, you hit the ground running and you keep going at full speed until you get there, wherever that may be.
I want girls to be able to be comfortable with being themselves as well, that also applies in the area you live in. Be that soccer mom that completely embarrasses her child while they are playing their very first game, be that CEO that solves the equal payment controversy in her company, be that oncologist that cures cancer.
Be whatever you want, but don’t forget to enjoy it too. What I want you all to take from this is to dare to dream and to take on whatever challenges you may have right now or in the future with your head high. Don’t pay attention to what people say about you or your gender.
I know what it’s like when those things happen, it hurts, but my very wise mother always tells me to keep going. No matter if the world is ending or your dreams seem impossible. You keep moving forward, and don’t look back.
