Though Homecoming is a big part of high school life across the country, it’s unnecessary to me. Having a guy paying all the money for a mum that’s instantly taken off in class because it is so annoying and itchy is silly. Paying all the money for the dress, shoes, jewelry, hair and makeup, all for just a few hours, is too much. Throw in the money for dinner, photos and the after party and total gets higher and higher. Paying all this money just to stress about who you’re going with, where you’re going, what you’re doing after is all so much and for no reason. Though yes it can be fun at times, homecoming seems to be a big stressor added to the fall season.

Being a senior, I’ve had my fair share of HoCo experiences the past three years, and let me tell you, one year is not much different from the other. So this year I decided not to do it the whole thing, as it has honestly gotten to the point where it’s boring. People who believe that these dances and parties mean something bother me in the sense that they don’t see the bigger picture. Have your fun but realize it will not affect your life once it’s over. For fellow seniors, not only are they having to plan their Saturday night but also worry about their college application deadlines that are near as well while keeping grades up, ordering caps and gowns, and most likely work as well.

I’m not completely against Homecoming festivities but I hope others realize that it’s not as important as it seems to be at the time. Relax, freshman, it’s your first, you have three more, sophomores, you have two more, juniors, one more, and seniors, we have prom and things more important to our future to worry about Saturday. Make HoCo the best it can be, but don’t freak out if it doesn’t turn out how you wanted it. When all is said and done, it’s not the biggest deal.
