Friday marks the end of White Ribbon Week (Disabilities Awareness Week). White Ribbon Week is a time to raise awareness of those with disabilities as well as ridding of the negative connotation some still use about them. This is a very important subject for students to be educated on and keep in mind, but not many people know about it.

Here on campus it wasn’t advertised as much as it could have been. As a member of the Best Buddies organization here, I knew about it but not all people have that opportunity. If I was not a part of the club, I probably would be unaware of the fact that this week was Disability Awareness Week.

The more students know about White Ribbon Week, the more awareness we are actually spreading. I believe it is crucial for a student to be educated on this so they don’t offend somebody without even realizing it. The amount of people who actually know a decent amount of information about kids with intellectual disabilities is much less than it should be.

People on campus should take part in things like this to help spread the word about what the week is all about. The more people we have who are aware and willing to take action in things like this, the less negativity there will be. The importance of spreading awareness of those with disabilities of any kind are extremely common to use in everyday life in our future and therefore should be more enforced at school.
