Going online to learn a new language

Every first period on “A” days, 12 students learn either Chinese 1, 2, and 3 or American Sign Language 3 from their online teachers.

The online courses still count for language credits and offer another unique opportunity.

“Because it is an online class we’re able to be in same classes like other people from other schools,” freshman Zayan Chowdhury said. “It’s kind of cool to have that kind of thing where, even though we’re in our separate home campuses, we’re able to have the same class and socialize with people from other schools.”

With only a small number of students signed up for these courses, it saves resources to have these classes online.

“The benefits of online classes would be that we’re able to offer classes we don’t have access to or the funding of a full time teacher,” counselor Ryan Kiefer said. “So, it gives students access to classes they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. If setup correctly it can do a good job of teaching the students the material they need and I think that’s dependent on the facilitator of the class and the nature of the class.”
