The girls’ wrestling team, featuring Jordan Johnston and senior Savannah West, compete in the Arlington Invite on Friday and well spend part of Thanksgiving Break practicing. “As an athlete in wrestling you have to watch your weight,” head wrestling coach Cody Bridwell said. “You can’t just eat whatever you want to eat.”

Girls’ Wrestling has its second tournament of the year on Friday at Coppell.

“We started off with a small tournament, and this one I would consider medium,” wrestling coach Tim Brennan said. “So by gradually amping it up, we get the new wrestlers used to it.”

The Coppell Cowgirl Classic will begin at 3 p.m. and will feature 23 teams from around Texas.

“I expect us to be in contention to win it,” Brennan said. “Right now we’ve got all sorts of injuries but they’re the typical things we see in the season, but if we wrestle well, we’ll be in the running to win the tournament.”

The team is ready to compete and has been working hard to prepare.

“I lift on Monday and Wednesday mornings with my team, I participate in the practices at school, and I go to after school club practice every night for extra practice,” junior Jordan Johnston said.

After winning their first tournament against Lake Highlands and Northwest, Johnston has high hopes for Friday.

“I expect that we will get first as a team because we got first last week and we have a strong girls team,” Johnston said. “This tournament will help us see how the other girls wrestle before district comes so we know what to expect.”
