Freshman on the verge of first class ranks

The end of the first semester is Friday near and tension is increasing for freshman waiting to receive their first GPA class rank.

“Stress levels are really high this six weeks because we’re getting our first ranks soon,” freshman Janice Ko said. “Everyone wants to start off of their high school experience with a good rank.”

With 461 students in the freshmen class, students like freshman Gabi Nguyen have been setting goals for themselves for their first class rank.

“I’ve been working a lot harder this six weeks and pushing myself,” freshman Gabi Nguyen said. “I really want to be in the top 100.”

Although students such as Ko and Nguyen both worry about ranks, counselor Staci Stokes hopes they will look beyond the numbers.

“Parents and students can sometimes be concerned with how well the student is ranked amongst their peers,” Stokes said. “In Texas, we have the 10 percent automatic admission rule, so many families hope that their student falls into the top 10 percent category. It is always important to remember that students outside of the top 10 percent can still go on to excellent colleges and find success in life. Students are worth more than just the numbers.”
