Frisco ISD student artwork and musical performances are part of the 9th Annual Arts in the Square event Saturday and Sunday in Frisco Square.

“Arts in the Square is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work to the community,” jazz director Zach Anderson said. “It’s our way of giving back to the people by providing them with quality music and having fun doing it.”

One of the few off-campus performances for jazz band, members have been rehearsing on a regular basis.

“We practice every Wednesday afternoon,” jazz band member Haden Bennet said. “We’ve been on our pieces for about three months.”

The event runs from 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. both days with the school’s two jazz bands performing on Saturday at 3:30 and 5:00 on the Simpson West Stage.

“Just like any other performance we encourage our students to play confidently and do everything the way we’ve rehearsed,” Jazz II director Tyler Elvidge said. “Above all else, to have fun performing and making music.”

For the student artists taking part in the show, they will be competing in the following categories: Fine Arts/Graphics, Pottery, Textiles, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Photography, Wood, and Miscellaneous.

“This allows the community to see the outstanding artwork that we are producing in FISD,” art teacher Jeb Matulich said. “It also gives the students and great chance to look at other works of art across the district.“
