Whether it’s something about school, being a student, or a social issue, columnist Emma Cramption tries to make sure her message is heard in her weekly column “Say it Louder”.

These days, funny pictures and texts on social media sites such as Instagram and Twitter that start out as an innocent joke can never stay that way. I have been noticing a lot of this recently.

For instance, there has been a meme on Twitter for a while now where people would photoshop something they like on Krusty Krab from Spongebob and something they dislike on the Chum Bucket. It started out harmless and funny like people would place a movie they like on the Krusty Krab and then one they hate on the Chum Bucket.

However, it didn’t stay that way for long.

People started using what was supposed to be an innocent meme to compare things like “whites vs blacks”, “straights vs gays”, “conservatives vs liberal”, “tall girls vs short girls”, etc. Within days, this joke became a controversy.

It’s things like this that make me hate social media sometimes. There’s always those people that have to take things one step too far. It sort of represents the way real life is. No matter where you are in the world, people like this are always going to exist somewhere. I really do hope, though, that in the future we can get closer to democracy than we are now. That in the next few years we’ll be in a place where we don’t need to compare race, gender, sexuality, political views, size, general appearance anymore.

Another real world example of this is friends just jokingly making fun of each other, but then someone has to cross the line and insult one of the things listed above. All we can do for now is stand up for those people, but hopefully in the future this won’t be an issue anymore.
