UNICEF is holding their second book drive from March 19th through March 29th. Used and new books will be accepted to help out Dallas ISD children and Better World Books, a non-profit which takes used books and sells them to fund literacy programs all around the world.

“The UNICEF book drive is an opportunity for us, high school students, to give back to the local and global community,” junior Ria Bhasin said. “This drive encompasses UNICEF’s message to be a better global and local citizen. We want all kids, no matter where they are from, to have access to literature.”

Last year, UNICEF raised 631 books for Frisco Family Services. All the books can be dropped off in the big boxes in the rotunda.

“Last year we got such a fabulous response of books being donated and we know that  there are other areas that just aren’t as fortunate as us and that’s part of what, actually, they picked the DISD school system this year, because Dallas doesn’t have as many books in their libraries for little kids as we have,” sponsor Angela Montgomery said. “It just seemed like people really enjoyed giving the books and we felt like it was helping those less fortunate.”

Students are being encouraged to donate any books to help support UNICEF and the kids who are less fortunate. The purpose of UNICEF is to advocate for the protection of children’s’ rights.

“The book drive UNICEF is hosting is more than just about UNICEF,” junior Elana Breslav said. “It’s an opportunity for students at Liberty to help students living just a few miles away from them. A simple book that many of us may overlook could mean the world to another student, so that was our motivation to start the book drive.”
