Making it to the state track and field meet is the goal for many athletes throughout Texas. But for senior Carrie Fish and junior Nissi Kabongo, a trip to UT Austin isn’t anything new as the two Redhawks returned to state with Fish claiming two top three finishes.

“It’s a huge accomplishment not just for our program but for our school to be able to bring these medals back,” head track coach Amanda Zambiasi said. “These girls work incredibly hard all year to get to this place so we’re extremely proud of them and they represent all of us.”

Attending state for her third time, Kabongo finished 5th in high jump but aspires for more in the 2018-2019 track season.

“I didn’t really meet a lot of the goals I had this year,” Kabongo said. “So, I’m gonna reiterate the same goals that I had from this year and try to aim and work hard to hit those next year. So I’d like to medal again at state next year.”

Fish finished second in the 1600m and third in the 3200m in her final meet in high school before continuing her athletic career at A&M University in the fall.

“I have mixed emotions because I was super excited to go to state but I was also very sad because I won’t get another chance to do that,” Fish said. “I’m really excited for the next step and the next four years at A&M.”
