Continuing the District 9-5A season strong, the tennis team aced the court on Friday, beating down Frisco with an 11-8 result. With another match at home Tuesday against Wakeland at 4 p.m., head coach Erica Dopson hopes the team will come out with more effort and enthusiasm.

“It was great to come out with a win but felt the team was a little flat and didn’t have a lot of energy,” Dopson said via email. “The team continued to grind and fight even when they didn’t play their best; tonight, we need to set a tone with our doubles play right out of the box.”

For senior Sydney Graff, Friday’s contest showed her how to individually improve for tonight’s match in order to better the entire team.

“I think personally I could be a little bit more consistent, just getting the ball over more and also communicating with my doubles partner,” Graff said. “[And collectively], we all come together as a team and really spark up that team spirit.”

Having prepared for tonight’s competition through numerous after school practices last week, sophomore Kayla Baker has confidence in the team’s abilities, but emphasizes the need to get things done early to secure a win.

“When we don’t come out strong, it puts a lot more pressure on ourselves to come back and win, while getting the games early on takes a lot of the pressure off and allows us to win without cutting it close,” Baker said. “We’ve had practice every day after school to prepare physically, and have been going over strategies and formations to mentally prepare.”
