William Shakespeare, arguably one of the most famous playwrights of all time, continues to cement his legacy with students still reading his work nearly four hundred years after his death. Students studying the playwright have been offered an unique experience to watch a live performance of Othello, one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, at Addison Circle Park on Wednesday.

“Mr. Melton, who is the AP lit teacher, organized this trip,” pre-AP English teacher Elizabeth Evans said. “He thought it would be a good opportunity to be able to see a live Shakespeare [play] and he invited all of the English classes too.”

Most high school English courses in the state of Texas require students to read at least one of Shakespeare’s works, especially pre-AP and AP classes, which sometimes require two.

“[In Shakespeare’s works] the language is different,” Melton said. “It’s hard to read and some of the words are unfamiliar, and some of the sentence structure is strange, so I think it would be a good idea for kids to actually see professionals doing it.”

Students will leave after school on Wednesday to watch the live rendition of Othello, but many are already ready.

“I just want to see more of his work,” freshman Alyssa Murphy said. “I really think Shakespeare is inspiring.
