Hosting Memorial Tuesday night at The Nest, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams took on the Warriors with both team earning wins.

The girls’ started the action by increasing their winning streak to five games with a 53-33 win, leaving them with a 5-0 District 9-5A record, tied for first with Lone Star.

“I think our team is pretty pumped to be 5-0 in district,” assistant basketball coach Jordan Starten said. “It’s our goal to go undefeated and become district champs, so it’s great to start off so well. What I think our athletes took away from last night’s game is that we can’t go into any game thinking it’s an automatic win. Our girls struggled to begin with, and realized that energy and our mental game play a huge role in our success”.

Among the Redhawks leading scorers, senior Kelsey Kurak with 12 points.

“It was a very competitive atmosphere,” Kurak said. “Just because they are a new school, we didn’t treat them any different than any other team. I definitely don’t think it was a best game, but I think we played pretty good and came out with the win which is the only thing that matters.”

The boys’ fared even better as they dominated the Warriors, coming out with a 82-35 win, bringing their District 9-5A record to 2-1 record.

Helping rack up the points, junior Micaiah Abi put up 21 on the scoreboard for the Redhawks.

“We did a good job of not taking them lightly,” Abi said. “We came out to do what we need to do and we kind of needed a blowout win to boost what we need to do well in district moving forward.”
