Wingspan: How long have you been in wrestling and what inspired you to do so?

Essien: “I’ve been wrestling for about four years now. I started a little before freshman year. I decided to wrestle mainly because I had two older brothers who wrestled throughout high school.”

Wingspan: What fuels your passion to continue to pursue wrestling?

Essien: “What fuels me to wrestle is my goal to be a state and national champion.”

Wingspan: What do you enjoy the most about the sport?

Essien: “What I enjoy most is the fact that your success in this sport is 100 percent up to you. You can’t blame your loss on anyone else but yourself.”

Wingspan: What is something that you want to improve on?

Essien: “I really want to work on getting my conditioning a lot better and being able to analyze loses better.”

Wingspan: What do you do to prepare for matches?

Essien: “Before my matches I tend to listen to music and stretch a lot to stay relaxed and not over think my match.”

Wingspan: What hypes you up or motivates you before a match?

Essien: “What hypes me up most before my matches is seeing my teammates wrestle and win before me.”
