From social issues to stuff happening on campus, senior Kanika Kappalayil provides her take in this weekly column.

There are two things that absolutely brighten my day: being able to share a good laugh and being able to pay someone a compliment.

The former is something that naturally occurs any day, but the latter is something I pay extra attention in putting efforts towards.

Think about it.

Ever thought someone looked nice? Did you tell them?

Or maybe they have awesome penmanship. Did you care to let them know?

Perhaps someone made a thought-provoking point in a class discussion. Did you share the sentiment?

I think we all have inner dialogues in our head where we comment positive things more often than we’d think about others. For me, I feel like that definitely holds true.

The problem, however, comes in the fact that more often than not we refrain from sharing these compliments with those around us.

But why? What’s the harm in letting someone know?

We all know how much of a boost a compliment can be for someone’s day. Compliments work magical wonders, being able to totally alter moods and put a bounce in one’s step.

Be more mindful I say. The next time you feel a compliment creep up on you in your thoughts, voice it. Let the person know!

A couple words can mean more to a person than you’ll ever know.

Be the reason someone tackles the day with a little more confidence and spunk.
