AP Art 4 students are exploring a new medium, using the cold wax technique for the first time.

“The use of the cold wax technique is relatively new in art and I thought it would be a great way to expose the students to a new medium this semester,” AP Art teacher Pernie Fallon said. “It’s not extremely difficult to work with and can be used to paint on many different kinds of materials.”

For senior Emma Krilowicz, the project has taught her how to work around her mistakes to create a final piece.

“Working with the cold wax oil mixture has forced to learn that even when I mess up, or the art doesn’t look the way I want it to, I can find a way to make it work,” Krilowicz said.

Fallon believes that this project is a great way for students to incorporate the new medium into their portfolio, which they will submit at the end of the school year for the AP test.

“Since the paint can be used on multiple types of materials, it gives student yet another option on a concentration piece for them to submit at the end of the year,” she said. “The technique adds texture and fullness to the piece which can be developed and made into a great final, and different, piece of art.
