With winter sports starting to wind down, track season is starting to heat up. Sending four athletes to state last year, the Redhawks are hoping to get more athletes back to Austin.

“We have many returners this year and we are expecting a great season,” head track coach Chip Gregory said. “We are hoping to get to the state level that we were at last year. I am hoping that our training will pay off.”

According to sophomore Marco Figueroa, that training has been intense.

“For the past three weeks we have been in the off-season and been constantly training in the morning,” Figueroa said. “Sprinters will run long distances, and in the afternoons we do weight training and every Saturday for the last three weeks we will do a mixture of these two workouts for like three hours or so.”

Gregory has high expectations for the nine meets before the district meet that starts on April 1.

“We are obviously looking to take districts,” he said. “We just have to keep working, doing what we’re supposed to be doing, and staying away from injury. I think we have a good chance of taking districts. As far as our girls go last year we had some impact athletes who gave us a lot of our points and as far as this year goes we have amelia, andrea, etc. we are hoping that our seniors will lead our team. until we get about a month into it is when we are going to really see how we are doing and I am excited.”
