Expanding their playing fields, baseball played two non-district games on Thursday against Lake Highlands and Sulphur Springs at Wylie East High School for the 2020 Raider Classic.

Going 1-0-1 on the day, the Redhawks tied Sulphur Springs 0-0, and beat Lake Highlands 3-1.

Playing mostly 6A schools as tune-up games, head coach Scott McGarrh thinks his team is prepared for the rest of the weekend.

“We’ve scrimmaged all big schools in order for us to be prepared for our tourney schedule and our district schedule,” McGarrh said. “I’m excited for this season and what this team can accomplish.”

Moving onto the semifinals on Friday, the team is awaiting the winner of the Sulphur Springs-North Forney game.

For McGarrh, the work getting ready for the 2020 Raider Classic began months ago.

“We started our preparation for today and this weekend back in August,” he said. “We have a solid core of young talent coming back. We spent all offseason in the weight room working on our strength and on the track working on our speed. Once we started practicing, late January we focused on fundamentals, communication and execution. We’ve scrimmaged all big schools in order for us to be prepared for our tourney schedule and our district schedule. I’m excited for this season and what this team can accomplish.”
