Debate is heading to their first competition Saturday at Princeton High School. One of the team’s main goals at the competition is to give new team members experience.

Debate One started their last major unit, Cross Examination, a form of professional debate and it’s skills are used in a lot of other debating tournaments like Lincon Douglas

“CX is one of the most important units that we have because it’s skills are used in many other professional debating tournaments,” debate teacher Michelle Porter said. “It helps students understand how to problem solve and collect evidence for real word problems.”

In CX, there is a year round topic that often focuses on a world issue with students having to do research without an obvious tool.

“You are not allowed to use the internet, instead you have to research and create your own database to help you find the evidence for the year-long question,” debate student Sohie Janbolat said. “I think this will help me to collect evidence in the future.”

Students began the unit by learning the basics of what CX is, where it is used, and what is needed for the affirmative side to win the debate.

“I think that learning CX can always be useful because of the imagination and problem solving skills it requires us to think of,” debate one student Melissa Clerk said. “I also think that it can be useful for me especially because I’m planning on going into advanced debate and these skills can come into handy in any type of topic”.
