Opinion policies explained

Wingspan Staff

A recent column posted in Wingspan’s opinion section has sparked a discussion among students on campus regarding gun rights, particularly Texas’ recent decision on open carry. With this in mind, Wingspan wants to clarify its policies on opinionated content, comments, and guest submission.

Opinion based articles reflect and embody the opinions of individual contributors and not those of the school, FISD or Wingspan as a whole. As a news-oriented publication, Wingspan focuses on publishing fair and unbiased coverage.

However, opinionated articles have a long history of being a valid component of journalism and will continue to be posted. These forms of opinion journalism will often reveal a person’s bias, however, the bias displayed in a given column or editorial does not represent the views of the Wingspan staff, the publication itself, the school or FISD.

Additionally, Wingspan’s policy regarding comments is that submitted comments will be published to the site only if they include the person’s name and a verifiable email. As guest contributors, any student can submit articles. Submissions will only be edited for grammar mistakes, explicit language, or inflammatory content.
