Simply Shreya: the blame game

Texas weather is the bane of my existence.

It is the “will they, won’t they” of temperatures if that makes any sense.

And yeah, I know, I’m writing about the weather. But technically, I’m not.

The recent winter storm that Texas experienced left many of us in shock as we were all very unprepared for it.

The aftermath left many without basic resources and necessities such as water, heat, and power. Thankfully, on my end, we just experienced a few internet problems here and there. But so many others were left without options and are still recovering.

But… who’s to blame?

Is the weather really to blame for this?

Or is it Governor Greg Abbott?

ERCOT?

Let me break this down.

ERCOT stands for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. And a further backstory, in 1935, Texas had its own power grid system set up so that there would be as little federal interference as possible.

Now, many are blaming Governor Greg Abbott for his failure in preparing the state for the storm.

Abbott is blaming ERCOT for its inadequacy of maintaining power in houses.

Other conservative critics and media outlets attempted to hold renewable energy accountable. And no, the ultimate reason why Texas suffered was not because our wind turbines failed.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz just chose to fly to Cancun instead.

Simply put, it was chaos.

This blame game could go on for hours and hours. An endless cycle with one accusing the next in line. When you’re in a position of power and there are people who rely on you, it’s more honorable to take responsibility for whatever happened instead of trying to pin it on others.

In the grand scheme of things, placing the blame on somebody else doesn’t change the end result. It only amplifies a topic that shouldn’t even be taking precedence.

People suffered.

People are still suffering.

What matters is making sure that people don’t have to suffer again.
