Eight Redhawks wrestlers hope to punch their ticket to state at the UIL 5A Region II tournament Friday and Saturday at Rock Hill High School. But only one enters the tournament undefeated: sophomore Mitchell Borynack (126 lbs).

Finishing 4th in the state at 113 lbs in 2020, Borynack is seeking a return trip this year.

“It was a pretty cool experience because not a lot of freshmen get to go to state especially in wrestling,” he said. “It was even better that I was able to place in state. Yeah, it was pretty cool.”

Even with as much experience as he has, Borynack continues to try and learn something new everyday.

“I’ve been wrestling the whole time since last season,” he said. “The learning curve, obviously with this much experience is not as big as when you first start, but it’s just like little things that you can pick up on every day.”

Trying to get better every day and internal drive is what motivates Borynack according to wrestling head coach Cody Bridwell.

“He’s constantly looking for tougher competition to develop himself,” Bridwell said. “Placing 4th in state last year has only motivated him to do better this year. He’s eyeing that state championship and he’s trying to get after it.”
