Winning both the District 8-5A championship and the 5A Region II championship, senior Stephanie Qiu goes for a 5A state championship in the 110-pound weight division. Qiu is the only Redhawk wrestler to advance to state and she does so after missing the end of the last year’s season with an injury.

Out of many, one stands alone as senior wrestler Stephanie Qiu is the Redhawks lone representative at the UIL 5A State Championship Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.

“To make states for me means a lot because I have put in so much time and effort and work into trying to make this happen,” Qiu said. “It didn’t even start when school began, I’ve been working and grinding since summer just to kind of get where I am.”

After winning the both the District 8-5A championship and the Region II championship at 110-pounds, the state tournament could be her final time wrestling.

“To be here, it really means a lot because it really paid off,” Qiu said. “As a senior it means a lot because I’m not going to get another go at this, and I’m probably not going to wrestle competitively. I can really see my hard work pay off and see all that hard work not go to waste.”
