The Redhawks track team competed in the regional track meet Friday and Saturday at The University of Texas Arlington with several athletes qualifying for state in six different events, led by junior Evan Stewart who advanced in four events.

Also advancing were the boys’ 4×400 and 4×200 relay teams which won regional championships.

“It feels great to be successful,” 4×200 relay runner, senior Will Ashmore said. “We plan on practicing hard and maintaining great shape while practicing handoffs and starting to perfect our relays.”

Representing the girls’ team at state is junior Cori Ross who will be competing in high jump, after winning the regional championship.

“Naturally I was sad that our girls relay teams isn’t going to state,” Ross said. “Although I would love to go with the people who’ve pushed me this entire season I know they’ll still be supporting me somewhere else. Regardless of who’s going to state I’m proud of the girls and how far we’ve made it, especially our 2 relays that broke both the school records last meet.”

With only a few practices to go before state, Ross plans on spending her time fine tuning her approach.

“My next few practices are most likely going to be broken down into specifics,” Ross said. “Working on the little things building up to the jump rather than the jump itself. Of course I’m still going to work on clearing different heights but there are other factors to look at now that I’m this far into the season.”
