Will Venom 2 Ruin Carnage?

Andrew Jáuregui, Staff Reporter

After much anticipation, the trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been released. After a teaser at the end of the first movie, and many delays due to COVID, comic book fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to see Carnage, a huge fan-favorite character, fight against his rival, Venom on the big screen, and the movie will be out only in theaters on September 24th.

However, this movie will feature a pg-13 rating, and based off this first trailer, it is clear that Sony is trying to emulate Disney’s upbeat and light-hearted formula. This works in most cases for the MCU, and worked well to extent in the first Venom movie, but this is unacceptable as an adaptation of the character of Carnage.

In the comics, Carnage is a symbiote, a type of sentient “goo” that bonds itself to a living host, and it bonds itself to ruthless and insane serial killer, Cleatus Cassidy. After the two bond, Carnage escapes from prison and begins a violent, murderous rampage. In order to fully appreciate the full extent of Carnage’s insanity, the film would have to been rated-R, so that his violent nature could be explored properly.

Additionally, in the comics, Carnage is stronger than Venom alone, and in Carnage’s initial storyline, Venom is forced to join forces with Spider-Man in order to finally take him down. Due to Tom Holland, the current Spider-Man actor, having been filming on other projects, including the third Spider-Man film in his franchise, it seems impossible that he will make an appearance in this film except for the possibility of a brief cameo.

To fix this, someone else should help Venom to fight Carnage. Although I’m not sure who it could be based off the characters we’ve seen from the first film, it is likely that a new character could be introduced to even the odds in the fight against Carnage.
