The Redhawks look to shoot and score on Tuesday in a District 9-5A game against the Independence Knights. While the athletes feel this is not their biggest competition yet, they still believe that they must treat each game with equal importance as not to get ahead of themselves.

The Redhawks dominated the Wakeland Wolverines Friday in a District 9-5A girls’ basketball game.

After trading buckets in the first quarter. It didn’t take long for the Redhawks to soar away making the score 17-10 with 2:17 left in the second.

“It’s not the way we wanted to start,” sophomore Keyera Roberts said. “We weren’t knocking down shots and we started off slow but gained momentum and picked it up.”

Playing for the moment has played a very important role in the Redhawks success this year.

“The thing that separated the other night as far as how we started is one, we didn’t knock down shots,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “The second thing is we didn’t push the ball in transition. We felt like we got good looks once again. We just weren’t hitting shots but once we did start to hit we were able to go into halftime 22-10.”

Going into the half with a 12 point lead, the Redhawks wanted to push the tempo. In the third quarter, they turned it up a notch.

“After the coaches talked, we said look, let’s push the tempo and get out and run,” Reedy said. “I wouldn’t say we had a sluggish start, it wasn’t crisp, but we did a good job of pushing the tempo in the second half.”

Defensively, the Redhawks held the Wolverines to 10 points in the first half and 7 points in the second half.

“It helps that we have a couple really really good defenders,” Reedy said. “It stinks because we lost one of our best on ball defenders. We have had teams that have scored where our margin of victory is 15 points a game and teams where our margin of victory is 7 points a game and that was when we won state. The thing that’s constant is defense. Offense you have people that can put in the hole. Defense is a collective effort and what’s been consistent since I’ve been in the program is we have always played good team defense. You are going to be a great defender. That’s how you get on the court.”
