All redhawks athletes hit the weight room at various points during their season. However, one team on campus spends the majority of their time in the weight room.

Bench press. Deadlift. Squat. Familiar terms to almost anybody that lifts weights. But for the redhawk powerlifting team, these are their competitions and tonight, they compete in a meet at lebanon trail.

“This is my third year of powerlifting, so I really want to make it to state by the end of the year, but there are a lot of new people this season,” senior Nick Teta said. “I just want to see them work hard and have fun.”

An outsider might think that powerlifting is just lifting weights, but to these redhawk athletes, the weight of competition between themselves and others is heavier than the weights.

“What I really love about powerlifting is seeing how much I can lift,” junior Dillon Davis said. “I push myself further to see if I can keep lifting more and more.”

After tonight, the team has two more meets, one on february 3rd at memorial, and one on february 10th at the nest. However, regionals and state are still to be decided.

“People might not know, but powerlifting is pretty difficult, because you’re going against other people who are in your same weight class and they can probably lift more than you, so you just try to outlift them,” Teta said.
