The future for The Mandalorian and Grogu

At the end of The Book of Boba Fett, we see Din Djarin and Grogu racing away in Mando’s upgraded Naboo starfighter. Flying off into space, the audience is left wondering where the beskar-plated bounty hunter might be headed.

Before leaving for Tatooine, the Armorer mentions that Djarinmust return to Mandalore and find a hidden underground lake in order to redeem himself for removing his helmet in the events of The Mandalorian. It seems apparent that Djarin will return to Mandalore, however I don’t think he will return to the planet until after he learns to wield the Darksaber.

Unfortunately for Djarin, there are few people in the Galaxy left who have wielded the Darksaber, those being Bo Katan and who she lost it to: Moff Gideon. It is unknown if Bo Katan had full control of the saber during the time she had it, but what is known is that Gideon seemed to have control of it during his fight with Djarin, where he lost it.

I am reluctant to believe that Mando would turn to Gideon for help Hannibal Lecter-style, so I am unsure if anyone will teach Djarin to wield it. In fact, I believe the most likely outcome is that Mando will slowly learn to control the saber across season three of The Mandalorian, leading to a finale in which Mando gains full control of the Darksaber and redeems himself.

As for everyone’s favorite little green alien, Grogu, his future remains uncertain, as he did not continue his Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, instead choosing to return to Djarin. Both a Mandalorian foundling and force-sensitive, Grogu is part of two opposite worlds, the Mandalorians and the Jedi. These groups have little that unite them, except for one thing: The Darksaber.

In order for Grogu to complete his story, I expect that at some point, Djarin will lose the Darksaber to some opponent that remains unknown. Afterwards, Grogu would defeat the enemy, which would leave the Darksaber as his by right. This would make grogu the second Mandalorian Jedi since Tarre Vizsla, who lived before even Yoda was born.

With the possibility of Grogu claiming both the Jedi and Mandalorian cultures as his own, and Djarin finding redemption, there is much to look forward to in the next adventures of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
