Wrestling advanced three automatic qualifiers and three state alternates to the UIL 5A State Meet Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.

Senior De’Leon Freeman and junior Mercede Alvarez enter the tournament after claiming the Region II championship in their weight division.

“My attitude is definitely important,” Alvarez said. “I deal with the pressure by putting my headphones in and getting in a good mood.”

Meanwhile, Freeman finds confidence in his ability and plan and believes in the Redhawks and their capacity to achieve the goals that have been set..

“I could win state and Mercede could too,” Freeman said. “I need to wrestle smart and stick to my game plan.”

Though De’Leon and Mercede are aiming for a state championship, fellow automatic qualifier, senior Sarah Ramos knows the effort will be there for all three.

“I think we’re all gonna go out and just give it our all as it’s the last push of the season.” Ramos said. “I can’t say that I know what that will mean in wins and losses, but I know the effort will definitely be noticeable to anyone watching.”
