Once again, bring on the bat

Fans anticipate new Batman film release

Casual and die-hard fans alike are eagerly awaiting The Batman, coming to theaters March 4. Based on trailers and released material, it seems like this movie will establish an intricate and interesting Gotham, filled with countless characters, friend and foe, for Batman to interact with.

However, it seems unlikely that a story taking place in such an intricate setting could possibly be contained into a single film, even if that film is three hours long. Much like Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, I expect this film to be the kickoff of the next great pop culture trilogy.

If that is the case, that leaves one question: What would the overarching narrative be? To answer this, we must look back to one of the initial trailers where Batman is analyzing clues, presumably left by the riddler. One of these clues reads ‘The sins of my father?‘ likely referring to Thomas Wayne. If true, this could mean that Riddler knows Batman’s identity, which would make him an especially large threat.

Focusing on the clue, this could be a reference to the Batman: Sins of the Father comic. If this is true, it would leave Bruce Wayne forced to come to terms with the fact that his father wasn’t the kind philanthropist he is often depicted as, but instead, a ruthless criminal.

This revelation could also lead to the introduction of the Court of Owls, a secret society made of wealthy Gothamites, once including the Waynes, which controlled Gotham from behind the scenes. In the comics, the court pushed Batman to his utmost limits, making them an ideal antagonistic force.

I suspect the Riddler will only be the main antagonist of this film, possibly making appearances further down the line, similar to the Scarecrow in Nolan’s trilogy, with the Court of Owls being slowly revealed in the first two films, all leading to a climactic final battle in the 3rd film that will prove Batman the victor over the court.
