Everybody knows new year’s day as far the calendar is concerned falls on January 1st, but different cultures also have their own new year’s celebrations, including the Persian new year, Nowruz on Sunday.

The Persian new year Nowruz is celebrated in Iran, and people that move away from Iran and go to a different country often carry on this celebration in their new country.

One student on campus that does this is sophomore Mohammed Bakshi.

“It is a time that everybody gets together and you make this really nice table,” Bakshi said. “There are 7 things you put on the table one is garlic one is apple and there is these homemade grass that you plant some seeds and they sprout and that goes on the table as well but then there are some coins sometimes you put coins and there are other things but generally just a time that everybody gets together and you have a good time and talk about the next new year ”

This celebration Nowruz is celebrated on the first day of spring.

There are also other celebrations that are connected to it like Chaharshanbe Suri when Persians jump over fire and light fireworks.
