Goal achieved for several Redhawk track and field athletes after qualifying for state at the 5A Region II meet Friday and Saturday at UT Arlington.

On the girls’ side, the 4×100 and 4×200 relays featuring runners such as Cori Ross, Sydney Bishop, Sydney Smoak, Jaden Williams and Ivana Odonkor secured themselves a spot at the state meet taking place at UT Austin May 12-14.

“It feels unreal,” junior Sydney Smoak said. “in the beginning of the season I never thought I would be able to get a medal at regionals let alone qualify to state.”

For the seniors such as Jada Williams, Cori Ross and Sydney Bishop, this has been nothing short of amazing.

“It feels really good to have qualified for state,” Williams said. “I am super satisfied that we made it to state and I am excited to compete one last time.”

As for the boys, the two state qualifiers include seniors Cameron Wooley in the 400 and Chris Johnson in the long jump.

“It feels good to know that I’m going for an individual event so I know I’m going because of what I did myself,” Wooley said.

Making state was the goal, but now there’s a new one for the Redhawks.

“I won’t be satisfied until it’s all said and done,” Johnson said. “And I know I gave it my best and have that metal around my neck.”
