Best Buddies took part in a Friendship Walk, a country wide walk being held for the first time in Frisco Commons on Saturday. The walk functions to help fund Best Buddies programs through money raised, and bring support to the organization.

“The Friendship Walk is a walk that all of DFW Best Buddies clubs participate in to raise money for future Best Buddies endeavors,” club advisor Caryn Teeling said. “We had about 10 of us from the club go and about 15 football players join us.”

The walk began with an opening ceremony, leading into the mile walk and games and food after. Although Best Buddies International coordinates the event, each school has to do its part to fundraise and set up a table to man at the event.

“Planning for the walk took weeks to plan and started mostly with getting the word out and having members of our club donate as much as they could,” Friendship Walk team leader Brooke Spencer said. “We walked together as a chapter and then ate and played cornhole at our table with other schools.”

This year, the chapter raised over $2000 in competition with other DFW chapters. The school that raised the most money received a trophy and surprise prize.

“We didn’t win bragging rights this year,” chapter President Rylee McHenry said. “Hopefully next year we can raise a little more so that how hard our chapter has worked is finally reflected.”
