Memorial keeps baseball’s playoff spot on hold

Coming off a loss against Lebanon Trail last week, the Redhawks baseball team hoped to turn it around Tuesday against Heritage, and that they did. After a slow start the boys pulled off a 7-6 win.

Revenge was on the mind of the baseball team as they faced off against Memorial on Friday, but the Warriors got the 6-1 win, moving the Redhawks to 5-5 in District 10-5A.

“They just outplayed us in every facet of the game on Friday, simple as that,” head coach Scott McGarrh said. “We just need the boys to relax, they’re a young team and they know they’re only one game away from qualifying [for playoffs] so that looming over them is putting this unnecessary pressure on us when there shouldn’t be any pressure and we should just be going out there and playing how we usually play.”

The Redhawks got back to winning on Saturday however, beating 6A Rock Hill in a 5-3 non-district contest.

“We played a whole lot better in this game compared to last week against Memorial and there was a different feeling in the team on Saturday compared to last week,” senior Cooper Wixon said. “We were having fun, and we were able to play our game, so we’re trying to translate that to district play and get over this hump so we can play our real game and qualify.”

The team’s final week of the regular season starts Monday, as they’ll match up against the Centennial Titans and try to lock in that playoff spot when the Titans pull up at The Nest at 6:00 p.m.

“Our main focus is getting the kids to be in a more relaxed state as a whole, try to get them in a sort of flow state where they can play their usual game,” McGarrh said. “If we can get the boys to play like how they did on Saturday, we can get business done and book our ticket in, but if not, it’ll become a bit of a struggle.”
