A story rewritten, softball makes history

Redhawk softball is rewriting their story starting on Thursday.

For the first time in school history, the team is making an appearance in the playoffs.

“It is a big deal, mostly for these young ladies who have put the time and work into this sport all year long,” head coach Baylea Higgs said. “They really bought in to everything myself and all of my staff have preached all year and I am so happy to see that it has paid off so quickly.I have been telling them to not worry about the rankings and just to play hard. Leave everything out on the field, play to the best of their abilities and play together.”

After 15 years of falling short, this year’s team did not let history write their story.

“To be in playoffs for the first time in school history means a lot to myself, and the team,” junior Macy Medford said. “Going from a lady in district ranking last year to finally making it to playoffs is a huge success and shows all of our hard work we put in during off season. All of the hard miles and extra after school practice hours, made a difference in how we did as a team and it all was worth it.”

The girls secured the playoff spot with a win over Independence on April 19, and for junior Ivory Starman, seeing their hard word come together is what makes it all worth it.

“It’s really amazing to have made it to playoffs for the first time in school history,” Starman said. “We know how hard we’ve worked and it’s exciting to see it all come together.

The team heads into a three game series starting on Thursday, which Medford believes could give the Redhawks a strong chance to move forward.

“My biggest goal in playoffs is to have a positive mindset, and encourage my team to work hard if everything isn’t going our way,” Medford said. “Luckily, we are in a three game series so we have extra opportunities to show out, but just making sure we go in with a positive mindset and shaking off our errors will play a huge role in how we do.”

While this is the team’s first playoff appearance, Higgs sees a big future for the softball program.

“I think this just means there is a bright future ahead for Liberty Softball and that we have some expectations of our program,” Higgs said. “We are excited to take on the newly found pressure and expectations.”
