Before walking the stage for graduation on May 20, some seniors on campus are taking part in a milestone occasion for many young adults: voting for Saturday’s local elections featuring choices for city leadership and Frisco ISD Board of Trustee positions

Already casting his ballot, senior William Jackson received a warm welcome at his voting location.

“They clapped when I walked in there because it was my first time voting,” Jackson said. “I did my own research for the candidates, and it was all over really quickly. I was in and out in five minutes.”

Although graduating seniors will no longer be under the jurisdiction of the Frisco Independent School District, some like senior Scott McCord still have interest in school board elections.

“I voted for the school board since my mom works for the district,” McCord said. “I looked into [the candidates] and I ended up just voting for them if I liked their policies.”

Seniors aren’t the only people on campus voting. Government teacher Amanda Peters will be exercising her right to vote and hopes that her students will do the same.

“There are definitely some important issues going on,” Peters said. “In Collin County in the city of Frisco. We have the Frisco Mayor election, which definitely will impact how the direction of the city is going to go forward. It’s incredibly important that students participate in helping to set up the school board with individuals that they feel will support public education.”
