Winning four out of their eight games in the NISD Tournament Thursday through Saturday, the Redhawks took home the ruby division trophy.
“We played overall pretty well,” assistant coach Taylor Ruesch said. “It was a really tough tournament on Friday, we had a rough day. But the girls were able to recover and show improvement, and that shows that they are committed and ready to win.”
Having been knocked out of the third round of playoffs last year by the Wakeland Wolverines, playing big-name teams like the Wolverines contributed to the poor results on Friday. Junior Brooklyn Brown believes the team played scared that day.
“I think we could’ve overall had more confidence in ourselves,” Brown said. “There were some games going into it we knew were going to be difficult. Instead of seeing it as a fun opportunity, we went into it scared, causing us to not play at our best potential.”
But with a comeback on Saturday, the team learned that Friday’s mistakes didn’t define them.
“The team learned that when they’re focused and locked in, they can produce really good points,” Ruesch said. “And that one bad day doesn’t mean we have to have a bad weekend. They were able to recover, so I think they really learned how to shake it off and take the next ball.”
