Pop of Culture: fashion trends

In this weekly blog, staff reporter Lilian Johnson talks about everything pop culture.

I am not a stylish person. Nearly everyday I wear the same sweatpants with some random sweatshirt. I don’t use clothing as a way to express myself, but I love when other people do. I love watching and listening to fashion content and I admire people who make an effort in choosing their outfits and who use fashion as an outlet to express who they are. As an outsider to the world of fashion, I have some opinions about current trends.

I mostly learn about new fashion trends from celebrities on social media, TikTok, and school and I’ve noticed that there’s a large difference between the type of fashion you see online and what you actually see in the wild. A lot of trends I see online, I won’t see when I step outside my house. Unless you live in a city like New York or Paris it’s rare to see people that really care about fashion.

Some trends that I have seen in the real world are Adidas Sambas, graphic tees, and Jorts. I’ve been seeing Sambas everywhere. They’re affordable and very versatile. I’ve seen them worn by celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Brent Fiyaz on social media and by regular people at school or at the mall. I love the simplicity of their look and how I’ve seen people style them.

Another trend I’ve been liking is wide fitting pants, especially jeans. I think wide leg jeans are a much better alternative to skinny jeans. They look effortlessly cool and they are far more comfortable.

A trend that is especially popular among our age group is graphic tees. I am not really a fan of this trend – at least the type of shirts sold by fast fashion brands that mimic a vintage look. These shirts are a little tacky to me. I can more appreciate a graphic tee that is authentic vintage or that has a simplistic design.

I’ve fallen victim to a few popular trends. Mainly shoes. I bought a pair of the Ugg slippers when they were first popular. I had the New Balance 992s, and I wear a pair of Birkenstock Bostons almost every day. For me, shoes are the easiest way to add a bit of style to my outfit.

What I love most about fashion is that there are so many different genres of clothing. I think people with the best style are creative and true to themselves when it comes to clothing. Fashion trends come and go, and its fun to follow along.
