Fashion design has been given more freedom than is usually given in classes recently as students have been given the opportunity to design a sewing project of their choice, free of guidelines.

“The project is to just make an original sewn piece,” fashion design teacher Kristi Swinnea said. “I want to see how much my students have learned from the past projects we’ve done, so I just ask that it be more difficult to make so they can show off their skills.

With no restrictions, there are endless opportunities, and many students have gone beyond the typical creativity level.

“I decided to make a doll dress and top because we’ve already made the simple things like quilts and shoe redesigns,” sophomore Angie Aguirre said. “We are able to pick our own level of difficulty so I wanted to do something unique and more difficult to make since it’s on a much smaller scale than clothes designed for us.

In previous projects, students were given instructions on exactly what to buy and what techniques to use to sew it. Now, they’re putting their lessons to the test.

“I’ve learned a lot of different techniques this year and I’m excited to put them all into the dress I’m making,” junior Nicole Egbuchunam said. “This project will definitely be a lot more challenging and take a few weeks but it’ll be worth it getting to see what everyone made.”
